STAAR Test Revamp

Test to be replaced with three shorter tests at the beginning, middle and end of the year

The Texas House has approved House Bill 8, paving the way to eliminate the STAAR exam and replace it with three shorter assessments starting in the 2027-28 school year. The new testing format would replace the STAAR test for three shorter assessments at the beginning, middle and end-of-year. This means that districts will be able to track growth throughout the year instead of year-end to year-end. Below is a short summary:

What’s Changing:

  • Texas is shifting the current single, end-of-year STAAR exam for certain grades and subjects into three shorter tests.
  • This change affects grades 3–8 in subjects like Math, Reading, and Science, depending on grade level.
  • Each smaller test will focus on specific skill sets instead of covering the full curriculum in one sitting.

Why the Change:

  • Reduce stress on students: Long exams were causing fatigue and test anxiety.
  • Better assessment of skills: Smaller, focused tests aim to more accurately measure student mastery of key standards.
  • Alignment with learning gaps: Helps teachers identify which areas students are struggling with earlier in the year.

How It Works:

  • Each subject will be broken into three separate testing windows throughout the school year.
  • Tests are shorter in duration—roughly half the length of previous STAAR exams.
  • Students will still receive an overall score, but it will be calculated across the three tests instead of one big exam.

Implications for Students and Teachers:

  • Teachers: Can adjust instruction more frequently based on interim results.
  • Students: Less overwhelmed on test days; testing will be spread out over time.
  • Parents: May see reports and scores more often, allowing earlier interventions if needed.
